Description

Subject Area: European Studies
This course can also be studied in the following specialisation: History

The course will address the process of transformation and fall of the major European colonial powers and empires in the second part of the 20th century. The course adopts a ʻlong viewʼ approach, mapping the colonial experience starting from the 19th. It stresses the importance of looking not only at institutional settings but also at conceptual apparatuses, the interactions between local culture and global politics, and the connections between the level of public institutions and the ʻintimate reaches of peoplesʼ livesʼ. The course explores the global consequences of the transformation and fall of Europeʼs colonial empires, looking at the role of empires as a catalyst for social, political and economic change.
