Americas Studies
Americas Studies is the only program of its kind in Australia
Americas Studies provides a combined focus on both North America and Latin America, within international, cultural and global contexts. You will gain an understanding of the Americas based on historical, social and economic perspectives, taking into account ethnic, gendered and cultural identities, their
transformations and their interrelationships.
Americas Studies at UNSW
This unique program looks at all of the Americas, providing a broader understanding of the links this region has with other regions of world. Students undertaking Americas Studies will build their knowledge of the political, economic, social and cultural developments that have occurred, and are occurring, in the Western hemisphere. Unique features of the Western Hemisphere will also be discussed and awareness of cultural and other diversities will be encouraged.
Australia's links with the United States are well known, but government and businesses are also increasing their relationships with the Latin American region, particularly in areas related to trade, investment, and resource extraction. There are also parallels to be drawn between the experiences of the Western Hemisphere and of Australia as both constitute areas of recent settlement. Similarities include the form of economic development, immigration, and the displacement of indigenous populations.
