Welcome
The School of Humanities, formerly known as the School of History and Philosophy, is one of Australia's leading centers of teaching and research excellence in the Humanities. Our academic staff are internationally recognized scholars and leaders in their fields. The School of Humanities hosts two key disciplines: History and Philosophy. Historical Studies at UNSW received the maximum rank of 5 and Philosophy received a score of 4 in the 2010 Excellence in Research for Australia report (ERA) confirming that Humanities at UNSW performs well above international standards for its quality teaching and research.
The School of Humanities convenes the teaching programs and courses that form the heart of the UNSW Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. In a rapidly changing world where versatility and adaptability are highly valued qualities, there is no better preparation for a future professional career or graduate studies than a well-structured BA degree, which provides the philosophical skills and the historical perspectives needed in the contemporary world. The School of Humanities coordinates the BA major streams in Environmental Humanities, History and Philosophy and contributes to a great number of interdisciplinary minor streams in Americas Studies, Asian Studies, Australian Studies, Environmental Humanities, European Studies, as well as Women's and Gender Studies. We also offer courses in History and Philosophy of Science. Moreover, at the School of Humanities high achieving students can take Honours in Environmental Humanities, History and Philosophy.
The School of Humanities is committed to research excellence. We offer two Research Higher Degrees – Master of Arts by Research and Doctor of Philosophy – Programs in History, Philosophy, Environmental Humanities, Asian Studies, Australian Studies, European Studies, History and Philosophy of Science (HPS), as well as Women's and Gender Studies.
We hope you enjoy our offerings and we are looking forward to receiving you in our School!
